24 hour comic

Last Friday I took part in a 24 hour comic to raise money for Comic Relief and my end of year show in London. Idea was that we would sit in the University library for 24 hours and aim to complete a 24 page comic.

My sister was visiting so my personal aim was to do 8 hours, leave to meet my sister, go out, then come back at 2am to do another 8 hours, oh and finish 24 pages in 2/3 of the time! Since I have never drawn a comic before I knew this would be interesting...

It started well, we all cracked on and started to get so, decent work done, above is my first page.

Above are my characters entering a fantasy land in between earth and the underworld! I wanted to use the ghost and girl from the book I did before Christmas because I never finished giving them a story! This is the last bit I did before going out and drinking, at this point I had 14 pages! I came back to the library looking like this :p

Library was pretty much empty other than us! And there was a lovely drawing in the notebook i left. It all got a little silly at this point because we were overtired, I was sobering up, and everyone's brains were scrambled... There were a lot of times where we were in hysterics for no reason whatsoever and at one point I did a motivation dance!

My characters went to fight some "Evol Spiritz" and my friend George who does medicine got a cameo:

By around 6-7 we were all slowly dragging out our last drawings, it was a fairly painful experience trying to beat the clock whilst trying to stay awake! I was done by 8.30 which meant I could watch Green Wing with my eyes mostly shut. More shots of the comics will appear on our tumblr soon-www.24hour-comic.tumblr.com and I will be printing some up to sell soon :)

Hello London

I manage to have found reasons to go to London 3 times in the past 12 months... It started with a trip to get my Visa last year where I went with friends and did a lot of drawing in the free galleries the rest of the time we were there. My last trip was to get a tattoo from my cousin, and this one was to go to a poster conference at the V&A.
I went with my friend Jess, getting a 6 hour night bus from Plymouth. It is a fairly uncomfortable experience, getting in at 7.15 am all bleary eyed and achy from sleeping sideways on bus seats... Being a student though, needs must and it means I can justify staying longer :).
We walked past Buckingham palace and through St.James park to go to the London college of Optometry which has an Optometry museum. I am currently working on a brief to design the walls of the Optometry centre at Plymouth uni and this was basically research for that (and the excuse to try on lots of funky glasses)
We then went to the National Portrait gallery and the Tate to do some drawing before visiting an old friend of mine at his bar next to the Thames and managing to get fairly tipsy in the middle of the afternoon! This resulted in some very confused walking to the hostel and me getting angry all the roads near Elephant and Castle tube station looking the same...
The next day we got up bright and early to go to a conference about posters at the V&A. The day consisted of a wide range of speakers from those analysing how posters are viewed, people who hold different collections, and artists using the idea of the poster in different ways.
I most enjoyed the talks from artists, David Mccandles from www.Informationisbeautiful.net who creates infographics to help us process large amounts of information more easily, watch his video "debtris" here.

Also work from "the space highjackers" which is pretty self explanatory and very interesting, click here to watch!

We finished up that day with Yo Sushi in Harvey nicks. I don't like fish but just end up getting all of the deep fried things which are amazing :)
The last day we left the hostel and headed straight for the science museum to play around with fun things like heat sensitivity cameras and liquid nitrogen.
Before heading across to the V&A to draw some more exciting things. I like to sit and draw patterns from all the amazing ceramics and textiles :)
We stumbled upon the performance section which I had never seen before, so many crazy costumes!
I then had a rather lovely 6 hour bus back last night-back to reality and uni work! Ah well...

Gig at Annabelles

So last night I went to a gig at Annabelles cabaret and discotheque in Plymouth. I had always wanted to go there since it just sounded awesome and they have the odd burlesque show which sounded even more exciting! Anyway, I got me and a friend in for free because I did some poster artwork for the band, Jessica and the Rabbits. They are a 7 piece jazz and blues cover band. They all dress in black white and red and play some seriously awesome tunes :)

I too, my friend Jess and we sat for a bit and drank pints of cider (cos it's cheap and we are poor students) pretending to look sophisticated in this very nice boudoir style bar before the band started playing.

We realised after a while that we were stood next to a group of drag queens who once the band started we're absolutely loving it! We had a good dance throughout their first set and left midway through the second set because the locals got creepy... No offence to most Plymouth locals but the odd ones ruin your reputation when walk around grabbing every single female in the room!

London and procrastination

Ok so the last London post took 3 days to actually upload cos the wifi in my hostel was pretty darn shite! But here is the rest of what I got up to :)

Saturday I met my sister in central London and we made our way up to Chingford to see my cousin in his tattoo studio. This should have been an easy journey but for some reason over half the tube lines were having maintenance done at the weekend so we got 3 tubes, and a bus going in the wrong direction...

Anyway, so the summer before last I was going to take my sister up to London to get a tattoo done but it has taken this long to organise/be brave enough to just get one!

Here is mine finished, I did a load of sketches to decide what I wanted, this is the one he designed it from:

Obviously the final one is much neater haha. I am super happy with it, has been driving me a little crazy with itchiness the past couple of days but it seems to be stopping now (yay). After we had both been tattooed we all sat and had a drink and a catch up before we went back to the centre for my sister to get her bus home.

Next day I went to the Tate for the morning to meet my friend Neil who I haven't seen since art foundation. In the end it took him forever to get in (bloody tubes) so I had nearly 4 hours walking around doing crazy drawings from paintings and things. We went to brick lane for the afternoon and walked around going in some hipster galleries and drinking cider in bars with cushions on the floor, all good fun :)

For my last day I went to the Chelsea design showroom in Chelsea harbour. This is basically a giant building with 200 different rooms where you can look at anything from bathrooms to curtains and light fittings.

I spent 2 hours in there marvelling at the insane amount of different fabric there was, so much beautiful stuff!

Since I have been back have been trying to carry on work, doing some more crazy drawings from the crazy drawings I did in London and dissertation reading since I finally decided on a question :)

Pattern design from a sketch I did.

So many books!

New glasses! Plastic rims because I was feeling a little hipster at the time haha. Oh yeah and I also got instagram.. Can you tell?

FAB day off

So, the camp decided to try something different for our days off this week. They shut the fine arts building entirely so we could all have our day off together so that every station could be open for the rest of the week. This meant the entire FAB crew were off together so we all made plans to hang out for the whole day.

We started going for breakfast at the diner... well, we went to the diner, decided it would be too long to wait and then drove to 3 other places (none of which did breakfast) before going back to the diner-bit of a fail but the food was amazing and totally worth it! Eggs on toast here make me a ridiculous level of happy :)

We then went and bought food and booze from stewarts, $2.99 for 6 cans and $2 frozen cocktails in bags, oh and goldfish crackers and cookies, i cant have a day off without buying goldfish crackers!

A few of our crew knew a path through the woods to a lower part of buttermilk falls where the water is stopped by 3 massive boulders so you can swim and chill out, it is really quiet and gorgeous. I do like the other area too but it was really nice to have a place all to ourselves.

We chilled out there for a few hours drinking cocktails out of bags like the classy people we are and having some beers in the lake. I took my big camera so got some gorgeous photos, we ended up taking some model like shots for shits and giggles since the scenery was so gorgeous and Kevn and Meg both have awesome 80s hair!

We then all went to Megs holiday home which is about 40 mins away from camp. We cooked up some gorgeous food and had key lime pie for dessert before curling up on the sofas to watch Harry Potter. I fell asleep for a bit and then we had to drive back to camp, seriously did not want to leave! But still, amaaazing day, I do love the FAB crew!
